The Importance of a Silhouette

Updated: Apr 10, 2020

Another photoshoot retrieved from my dorm room where I needed something to accomplish. Taken from the 7th floor, I climbed up this 6 feet window and began posing for fun while being struck with inspiration at the same time. FYI, kids don't try this at home. It was easy to get up there, but not so much when it came time to climb down.

Looking at this picture gave me insight on several things that I did not realize when I started this photoshoot. The first thing I noticed was the clear outline of my pose with the natural light from the window shining through. The definition of a silhouette, according to Google dictionary, is best described as "the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against a lighter background, especially in dim light". Sometimes, the silhouette of a person or thing can tell you way more than the actual physical details. In fashion, silhouette can be referred to the line or shape of a garment. It helps the fit of a garment look flattering on a person's body. Like a good outline, it sets a tone or a foundation that leaves you intrigued, wanting to know the story and details behind it.

My silhouette in this picture signifies how I live my best life. Standing on my toes illustrate how I do and go about things that keeps me on my toes. That means dreaming big, doing things outside my comfort zone, and having faith and trusting in God. My balance and the hand on my head indicates how I remain grounded in who I am and what I want in life. Like a dancer, my mind leaps at the endless possibilities of my present and my future.

How does your silhouette signify your life?
